Vice Adm. Brian B. Brown, commander, Naval Information Forces (NAVIFOR), welcomed U.S. Naval Academy Midshipman during their 2019 Summer Cruise in Suffolk, Virginia, July 10.

The eight midshipmen were part of a cyber-related summer training program executed by Fleet Cyber Command/Commander, 10th Fleet.

Brown provided an overview of the overall mission, structure and function of NAVIFOR and the role of the Navy’s Information Warfare (IW) Community before answering nearly a half dozen questions from the midshipmen. Most were cyber operations or computer science majors, and all were interested in direct commission to Cryptologic Warfare or Information Professional, the Navy’s cyber operations specialists, as part of the larger IW Community. Brown congratulated them on their participation in this summer program and encouraged them in their pursuit to join the IW team stating, “Information Warfare is a great community to be in right now.”

Lt. Daniel Gresham, a NAVIFOR cryptologic warfare officer, further explained what NAVIFOR and the IW community is all about as well as answered follow-on questions from the midshipmen.

“With my computer science background and my love for puzzles, I chose to enlist as a CTR where I went to many schools for training to include Morse Code,” said Gresham. “I’ve had the honor of serving under many great commanding officers. As an officer, you will be challenged and expected to lead your team of Sailors to include standing by them and supporting them,” he continued.

Gresham continued discussing various duty stations and answering the many questions from the Midshipman.

“I enjoy the summer cruises because I learn a lot as I did while on a summer cruise in Pearl Harbor and during an internship,” said Midshipman 1st Class William Reed Leesman, a cyber-operations major from Cincinnati, Ohio. “I chose the Navy because I wanted to serve in my fullest capacity and I also chose cyber operations for my major because I love problem solving and critical thinking,” he added.

“This summer cruise is a great experience to be able to interact with and work alongside officers in the community I’m interested in,” said Midshipman 1st Class Tamara Watkins, a political science major from Murfreesboro, Tennessee. “I joined the Navy in June 2012 as a CTR, worked a second job, took classes at night and made it to second class before reporting to the Naval Academy where I feel my major sets me up to be more eligible for CW. I really appreciate the way in which the summer cruises are set up. Following our plebe year, my summer cruise was aboard a ship where I was assigned to shadow an enlisted Sailor, which I feel is critical to developing leadership skills.”

The Midshipman Summer Cruise strengthens the value of what midshipman see, experience and witness through discussions, briefs and tours of various commands.

NAVIFOR’s mission is to generate, directly and through our leadership of the Information Warfare (IW) Enterprise, agile and technically superior manned, trained, equipped, and certified combat ready IW forces to ensure our Navy will decisively DETER, COMPETE, and WIN.
