The ship’s sponsor, Margaret Womble, daughter of Senator John C. Stennis, visited the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) with her son and granddaughter in Norfolk, July 12.
A ship’s sponsor is traditionally a female civilian who is appointed by the secretary of the navy believed to bestow luck to the vessel.
“It’s been a joy from the very beginning,” said Womble. “It was such an honor to christen this wonderful vessel and to see and hear about it through the years. It makes me very proud and would make my dad very, very proud.”
This was Womble’s first visit in over 17 years, and her first since the ship’s arrival to its new home port in Norfolk.
Womble met with the ship’s leadership and Sailors, had lunch in the captain’s in port cabin, and went on a tour of the ship.
The John C. Stennis will begin its refueling complex overhaul (RCOH) process in 2020, and Womble expects another 25 years of service through training, dedication and commitment.
“You feel that spirit on this vessel, and I know it will continue,” said Womble.
The John C. Stennis is pierside in its new home port in Norfolk, after a seven-month deployment, preparing for RCOH.
