The United States Marine Corps makes Marines who win our Nation’s battles and return to the workforce as quality citizens. Usually, this involves Marines serving their obligated time in service, then returning to civilian life with the leadership values and morals instilled into Marines throughout the course of their initial training and experiences thereafter in the Marine Corps. Another way the Corps instills positive morals and leadership traits to our citizens are the leadership programs the Corps offers to young men and women. The Summer Leadership and Character Development Academy (SLCDA), a six-day program held at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia is one such program and one young woman, Grace Kenney, looks forward to attending.
“I was looking for any military summer programs that I could apply to, and the Leadership Academy (SLCDA) stuck out to me because it seemed like it would focus on more than just one aspect of military life.” Kenney said.
Kenney, a senior at Ursuline Academy, takes an active role in her community, and oftentimes beyond her own community.
“For the past two years I have gone on a school service trip to Bethlehem Farms in West Virginia, where we work on the farms itself, but we also provide service to people in the community who cannot afford it,” Kenney said.
While taking an active role in her community, she also takes the role as a leader amongst her peers, and participates in many extracurricular activities, such as being the discussion leader for her “Inspiring Women Discussion Club.”
While her future is uncertain, Kenney hopes SLCDA will provide her with a base of military knowledge and leadership capabilities to help pave her way to success.
“I am applying to the Air Force Academy, and I am hoping that my experiences in the Leadership Academy will help me to determine a clear path for my future,” said Kenney.
The SLCDA focuses on developing leadership and character. Over the course of a week she will get firsthand experience from many notable leaders from around the country, to include entrepreneurs, and Marine Corps leaders.
