SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii – As the University of Hawaii at Manoa Rainbow Warriors football team unloaded off the bus, the 25th Infantry Division Hui Ha’a Team greeted them with loud chants that echoed through Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, June 29, 2019.
“Tropic Lightning” Soldiers performed the “dance of the warriors” and set the day in motion, which included team building and weapons instruction.
Before the performance and the team’s arrival, Allen Hoe, Gold Star father of 1st Lt. Nainoa K. Hoe, passed around the same flag that his son had the day he was killed in Iraq in 2005, and also the same flag that he himself had when he served his time in Vietnam for some motivation to the Soldiers.
Commanding General of the 25th Infantry Division and Hawaii Maj. Gen. Ronald P. Clark spoke to the team about the importance of the relationship and the hollow grounds they would be training on.
Our partnership with the football team is something special, said Clark. We hope to be able to continue having a positive relationship with not only the Rainbow Warriors, but the entire community of Hawaii.
Clark was not alone with his admiration of the relationship between 25th ID and the Rainbow Warriors.
“I feel like from our side, we are very fortunate to have this partnership,” said Rainbow Warriors Head Coach Nick Rolovich. “I get up and walk down my stairs to work; the American flag is flying right there. I appreciate everything all of our military branches do, but especially the army putting together this day for us.”
Throughout the day, Soldiers used their military training to teach the Rainbow Warriors how to work together as a team with minimal communication at the Leader Reaction Course.
In addition, other Soldiers demonstrated how to properly hold weapons, put them together, and safely fire them on an electronic simulation training range.
“For the soldiers it’s great,” said Clark. It gives them the opportunity to really showcase what they do, and to share it with the community, in this case, the UH football team.”
This is the fourth year the Rainbow Warriors visited the base with no plans to end the partnership anytime soon.
