Story by 1st Lt. Miranda Simmons

    48th Fighter Wing

Royal Air Force Lakenheath, England –Air Force Reservists and Air National Guardsmen from across the continental United States volunteered to support the 48th Civil Engineer Squadron with ‘steady state’ manning assistance.

Reserve personnel have integrated throughout the squadron’s operations flight sections – Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning, Water and Fuels, Power Production, Electric, Dirt Boys, Structures and Customer Service.

“Our Reserve teammates are part of an ‘all of the above’ strategy to recover RAF Lakenheath from the impacts of a poorly performing base maintenance and repair contract,” said Michael Myers, 48th Civil Engineer Squadron Deputy Base Civil Engineer. “They are a key part of the strategy, all working together with Liberty Wing Airmen.”

Through Total Force efforts, CES has addressed and closed nearly 6,000 open work orders over the first four months.

The HVAC element completed over 300 tasks, overhauled the Air Traffic Control Center AC, and enabled equipment certifications.

Structures addressed lighting deficiencies in over 160 facilities, retrofitting 292 LED fixtures.

The Power Production section replaced aircraft barrier arresting systems and performed barrier maintenance on multiple generators and mobile units.

“The Air Reserve Command manpower has tremendously assisted in the day-to-day work requirements given to the 48th CES Operations flight,” said Maj. William Bentley, 48th CES Operations flight commander. “Structures, Dirt Boys, Power Pro, Electricians, HVAC, Water and Fuels, and Customer Service sections have all benefitted from the manpower boost.”

Leveraging Total Force strengths maximizes the use of the Air Force’s Airmen, which are essential to maintaining this important Air Force warfighting platform.
