BASRAH, Iraq — In an effort to enhance community relations with the citizens of Southern Iraq, members of the 6th Regional Commando Battalion, Iraqi special operations forces, visited two schools and a local market, April 19.

"One of the greatest issues we face right now is not having enough support from the community as we'd like," said a 6th RCB executive officer. "They simply don't know who we are."

"It's important for the 6th RCB to take an active role in the community," said a coalition forces advisor. "It allows the people in the community to see who they are and what they can do to help."

While visiting one of the schools, the principal walked around and discussed issues and problems they face on a daily basis because of limited funding.

According to a company commander with the 6th RCB, the unit's goal is to help the community and improve their way of life by doing more than ridding the region of terrorists.

"One of the biggest ways we can earn the trust of our people is by following through with their needs," said the commando's executive officer. "To gain trust we have to fulfill the needs of the people and not make empty promises."

The executive officer emphasized the importance of following through on what they will do for the citizens of the area.

Whether they hand out toys to children or provide medical supplies, a coalition forces officer said visiting with the community more frequently will assist everyone.

"It will benefit the community by giving them what they need and it will benefit the 6th RCB by having a community that believes in what they are doing," he explained.

"In the future we'd like to see more humanitarian missions because they provide a better and constant chance to grow as a nation," said the commando company commander.
