    Commander, Navy Reserve Force

Vice Adm. Luke M. McCollum, chief of Navy Reserve and commander, Navy Reserve Force, honored civilian employers from across the nation for their exceptional support of America's Navy Reserve Sailors, during a Navy Employer Recognition Event (NERE) in San Diego, June 28.

The day commenced at the littoral combat ship, USS Charleston (LCS 18) where guest received a welcome brief from McCollum, followed by presenting each employer with a certificate of appreciation.

"We’re glad that you are able to attend today’s event,” said McCollum. “Navy Reserve Sailors are a vital part of the Navy’s Total Force, and the operational support they provide is critical to the continued success of the United States Navy. Employers like you are a key element in the life of every Reserve member, and the service each Sailor provides to the Fleet is achieved in no small part due to your company’s patriotism, understanding, and support.

    ”

During the recognition event, employers spoke with aviators and aircrew and experienced an up-close look at aircraft assembled at Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VR) 57 aboard Naval Air Station North Island, California. Participants also traveled to Naval Amphibious Base Coronado for a Coastal Riverine Squadron (CRS) 1 small-boat display, static displays from 4th Medical Battalion and SEAL Team 17 as well as viewed a dynamic demonstration from the Military Working Dogs Division. Another highlight of the day featured a live demonstration from the Navy Marine Mammal Program’s dolphins and sea lions at Navy Base Point Loma.

John Slater, United Airlines senior vice president in-flight services, said the aircraft display at VR-57 was the highpoint of the day. “My father was a military pilot, so every time I get around aircraft I get fired up,” said Slater. “Experiences such as this help us understand what our active duty and reserves do and how valuable that experience is, allowing us to make accommodations for it so that they can continue to provide security for our nation.”

NERE 2019 culminated with dinner and reception at the historical, USS Midway Museum in downtown, San Diego.

“The Navy mission is critical and the organizations who support their Reserve Sailors are an important part of that mission,” said McCollum. “Today was a special day highlighting a sample of what our Navy Reserve Sailors do when away from their civilian job.”
