Air Force Reserve Explosive Ordnance Disposal technicians joined Air National Guard EOD technicians at Volk Field Air National Guard Base for Audacious Warrior 2019, an annual exercise that provides EOD Airmen with classroom and scenario based training that they may not be able to get at their respective home stations.

In the past, Air Force Reserves conducted a similar training which focused on domestic operations, Patriot Warrior. This is the first year the Reserves joined the Air National Guard in Audacious Warrior, which focuses on domestic operations as well as operations in a deployed environment.

By training together, the EOD technicians are able to share best practices and learn from one another.

“It brings EOD technicians together, and lets you train to work together in a deployed environment because that’s how you’re actually going to operate,” said Master Sgt. Robert Krider, 104th Civil Engineering Squadron EOD Operations NCO in charge.

During the two weeks at Volk Field ANGB and Fort McCoy, the EOD Airmen trained in wartime conditions with Improvised Explosive Devices and Unexploded Ordnance, and domestic operations with IEDs, as well as with chemical weapons and aircraft mishap exercises.

“Whether it be Guard, Reserve, or Active Duty, we all have varying experience levels,” said Tech. Sgt. Joe Mann, 439th CES EOD technician. “To diversify your knowledge is one of the greatest benefits of attending Audacious Warrior.”

The exercise also provided the Airmen with Status of Resources and Training, a mandatory yearly training, and helped them accomplish tasks that may be difficult to get at their home stations such as large scale demolitions, weapons of mass destruction, and small unit tactics.

“There was a lot of planning, forethought and effort put in to give the best training available,” said Mann. “I feel as though it was successful from start to finish and I would definitely come back in the future.”
