SAN DIEGO, Calif. (June 7, 2019) -- The Nevada Air National Guard completed its water survival training, from June 6 to June 8 at Point Loma Naval Annex, California.
This training exercise teaches the airmen the essential skills needed to survive is in the event the air crew must ditch the airplane in the water.

Tech. Sgt. Sean Bird, an aircrew flight equipment instructor assigned to the 152nd Operations Support Squadron (152 OSS) with the 152nd Operations Group (152 OG) said, “This is plan ‘B,’ in the event the crew has to ditch the aircraft, the skills learned here can better help them survive.”

Over 100 people were qualified in the training exercise.

The training is broken into five sections: survival kit components and water survival gear, swimming techniques, twenty-man life raft, one-man life raft, and parachute canopy exit.

The training was conducted by 12 instructors assigned to the aircrew flight equipment unit, with the 152 OSS with the 152 OG.

The 152nd Medical Group had two medics standing by in the event something went wrong.

Senior Master Sgt. Frederick Beer, superintendent aircrew flight equipment assigned to the 152 OSS with the 152 OG.said, “It’s important we refresh the aircrew on a regular basis to keep them familiar with procedures and equipment that they use in that situation, if they had to ditch an aircraft in the ocean.”

“Exposure, in a real-world event, you are going to be in cold water,” said Master Sgt. Kris Whetzel, aircrew flight equipment instructor assigned to the 152 OSS with the 152 OG. “To get exposed to a dangerous situation in a cold environment like this, helps better prepare the airmen.”

Beer said this was a great opportunity to bring the airmen together, to train them on essential life saving skills, and have some fun at the same time.
