    Scholarships help Fightertown get educated

For Fightertown's many students, the application deadline for scholarships is swiftly approaching. There are 20 scholarships available this year for service members, dependents and former service members, who are in school. The deadline for all scholarships is May 1.

"Applications have to be turned in on time to be considered," said David Ellard, the education services officer for Marine Corps Community Services. "A couple years ago, several of our scholarships were not awarded because not enough people applied."

The scholarships for graduating high school seniors and continuing education students are from the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort Officers' Spouses' Club, MCAS Beaufort Federal Credit Union, Embarq and MCCS Lifelong Learning. They are intended for spouses and dependents of active duty service members as well as retired service members who were stationed at the Air Station.

"These scholarships are very beneficial to the military community," Ellard said.

"The 20 MCCS Lifelong Learning Scholarships are worth $10,000 combined and that's not including any of the other local scholarships. That is a lot of money toward people's education who may not otherwise be able to go to school."

Raising such a large sum of money for scholarships was only possible because of donations from the community.

"These scholarships come from generous donations from individuals, groups and organizations, and even colleges and universities," Ellard added. "They are made available to our military communities because people appreciate the sacrifices our service men and women, and their families, make for our country."

Applications can be obtained at the MCAS Beaufort Education Office, Marine Corps Family Team Building Office, Navy Marine Corps Relief Society, local highschool or college guidance offices, home school representative or through your unit's Family Readiness Officer, according to the Lifelong Learning Center's Web site.

"I highly encourage anyone who believes that they are eligible for these scholarships because I know that pursuing a degree is costly and may deter individuals from doing so," said Amy Albert, the scholarship committee chair for the Air Station's Officers' Spouses' club. "Scholarships, such as the ones OSC provides, typically ease the burden of higher education costs."
