The medical department aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5) hosted a health fair on the mess decks June 13.

The health fair provided Sailors with information and resources for dental health, personal fitness, nutrition, mental health as well as other medical services beneficial to Sailors needs while assigned aboard a Navy ship.

The fair was designed to educate Bataan Sailors with making safer and healthier decisions for a better life, as stated by Lt. Michael Schaffer, Bataan’s medical administration officer. “The purpose of the fair is to get the message out to the crew on various health topics so we can promote the health and wellness of our crew.”

The mess decks were setup with multiple booths each with representatives from Tricare, Naval Medical Center Portsmouth and Fleet Surgical Team Four.

“The point is to educate,” said Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Ruffy Marquez, a behavioral health technician assigned to Fleet Surgical Team Four. “We want to teach them what to avoid, what to be wary of and what resources are out there. With this fair we’ll teach you about what to eat, stress management and what to avoid on port [overseas] visits among other things,” said Marquez.

In addition to providing information, representatives also provided Sailors with giveaway items to help inspire the crew to keep up their health. Sailors were able to receive dental care products, step counters and multiple pamphlets of information on various health topics.

“I think the fair was a great idea,” said Boatswain’s Mate Seaman Kristina Rucker, “I learned a lot of different things from the people doing the booths and the helpful tools they had with them like the pamphlets, and this neat step tracker they gave me.”
