SIBIU, Romania – U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to Comanche Troop, 1st Squadron, 2d Cavalry Regiment, cadets currently enrolled at the Romanian "Nicolae Balcescu" Land Forces Academy and members from the Romanian Land Forces and Romanian Air Force join together for the Saber Guardian 2019 static display in Sibiu, Romania, June 15, 2019.
SG19 is an exercise co-led by the Romanian Land Forces and U.S. Army Europe as part of the summer 2019 series of exercises to improve the integration of multinational combat forces.
Romanian Land Forces 2nd Lt. Bogdan Aioanei, commander for 1st Platoon, 1st Mountain Company, 24th Mountain Troops Battalion, based out of Miercurea Ciuc, Romania, acted both as a member of the liaison officer team and as the public affairs officer to the NATO Force Integration Unit Romania to enhance visibility of troops via photography and social media platforms during SG19.
“As a member of the mobile LNO team, the mission was to facilitate the procedures and the relations between the incoming troops, local authorities and entities from host nation, Romania, throughout the tactical road march with forces from 2CR,” explained Aioanei.
Having the largest number of members in the entirety of the Romanian Armed Forces, Aioanei serves as a Soldier for the Romanian Land Forces.
“The level of professionalism is indeed up to standards,” said Aioanei, describing his organization. “It’s an honor to serve my country as a proud member of the Romanian Army’s Land Forces.”
Annual summer exercises in Europe act as a unifier between the U.S. and NATO allies and partnering nations, providing the chance to enhance partnerships and increase readiness.
“I worked with the U.S. military last year for the multinational exercise, Rapid Trident 18, in the Ukraine” said Aioanei. “Since then, I have been looking forward to [working] with our American allies during exercise Saber Guardian 19 and [bringing a] contribution towards relations between the host nation, Romania, and [the] U.S. Army.”
Aioanei further elaborated, “It’s a great opportunity to train for reactions to different situations in case of a world crisis,” said Aioanei. “The activities that have been conducted up until now and those that are yet to come can only be beneficial to our mutual relations and the interoperability of NATO forces.”
The tactical road marches and border crossings during SG19 took place between Germany, Hungary and Romania; each entity contributed to the smooth transition between the countries, which in turn made it a successful convoy.
“Yes, we [Romanian Land Forces Soldiers] participated in both the Hungarian and Romania border crossings,” said Aioanei.
“We had the opportunity to work both with the representatives from the Movement Coordination Center in Bucharest, [Romania], the border police from Hungary and Romania and also with the Americans, which kept tabs on convoy movement in order to facilitate procedures and make it easier on troops to pass the border and continue transit towards their final destination in Cincu, Romania.”
This year, Romanian locals were invited to check out the 2CR and Romanian Land Forces static display at the Romanian "Nicolae Balcescu" Land Forces Academy.
“I have been part of static displays during my time as a student at the Land Forces Academy here in Sibiu, [Romania],” said Aioanei. “For people who have never been to a static display, it’s a great way to see some of the military assets during our operations in the field and also to understand the way in which allies are working together to [enhance] interoperability in the operational environment.”
With the upcoming squadron defense field training exercise between 2CR and Romanian Land Forces, Aioanei believes that the troops look forward to the opportunity for U.S. and Romanian military service members to act according to tactics, techniques and procedures in the field and in real life battlefield conditions.
“I think that, in the end, when the after action review will be conducted, lessons learned will play a major role in spotting any problems that may have been found during this exercise,” said Aioanei.
“Also, this helps for finding ways in enhancing interoperability and optimizing TTP’s in order to enable the forces to further advance in their training and to be able to adapt in any condition necessary for reaching their final objectives during their missions.”
