These famous words were part of the President’s inaugural address on January 20, 1989 and are the driving motivation behind the largest single-day Hampton Roads community service project coordinated by a Norfolk-based aircraft carrier.
In recognition of the “Thousand Points of Light” speech, over 1300 Sailors stationed aboard the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) volunteered June 13 to honor the memory of their namesake.
“The 41st President’s selfless service to the nation is a true inspiration,” said Capt. Sean Bailey, the ships commanding officer.
The “Thousand Points of Light” community relations event started last year, as a birthday tribute to the former Naval aviator and philanthropist.
This year’s event was even bigger than the previous year, with approximately 250 more volunteers.
It covered over 56 different venues within the Hampton Roads area that spanned from Williamsburg, Virginia, to Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Sailors lent a helping hand by providing maintenance at local parks and beaches, assisting at donation centers, stocking shelves at food banks, and participating in events with elderly veterans and children at area youth groups.
“I’m very proud to represent the Sailors of George H.W. Bush out here.” said Bailey. “Today we took the time to give back to the Hampton Roads community, a community that is so supportive of its military.”
GHWB is at Norfolk Naval Shipyard undergoing a docking planned incremental availability (DPIA).
