New Fire Station Hosts Open House

CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, NM, UNITED STATES

Story by Airman 1st Class Vernon Walter

    27th Special Operations Wing

The Cannon Air Force Base Fire Department held an open house to celebrate the grand opening of a new fire station near Cannon Family Homes at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., June 6, 2019.

The fire station, officially opened June 1, was constructed to provide a location for Cannon’s firefighters closer to Cannon Family Homes and respond to calls within their short time limit.

“We have seven minutes to respond to call,” said Jason Berry, 27th Special Operations Civil Engineer Squadron fire chief. “With a minute taking information, a minute to inform us about it, and a minute to get ready, it was hard to get to Chavez in time; especially going through both gates. But with this new station, we can get anywhere in Chavez with time to spare.”

The station was built with the intention of holding four firefighters to complement the standard fire engine in its garage. Each firefighter staying there has their own bedroom, and they share a common area and fully equipped kitchen.

“I like this facility a lot,” said Staff Sgt. Danny Russo, 27th SOCES firefighter crew chief. “It’s always nice to have something new and try to make it your own. Being so close to housing feels really nice, to be able to help the community out and be closer to them.”

The open house provided residents of Chavez an inside look. Children were able to climb inside the fire truck and see tools utilized by firefighters, while the adults were given a tour around the facility to give them a better understanding of the new station.

“We wanted to give the community a chance to see what we have to offer,” Berry said. “With being able to get to anywhere on Chavez so quick, we can get our initial attack done sooner to stop fires from getting to a point where we can’t control them. That gives follow-on units from the main station a helping hand in saving homes.”
