FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, Pa. - Spc. Emily Billings serves as a Combat Medic Specialist with the 108th Area Support Medical Company, 213th Regional Support Group, Pennsylvania Army National Guard.
Billings joined the PAARNG after listening to a friend talk about her service and deciding she wanted a change in her own life.
“I really wanted the challenge, I really wanted to go through basic training, I wanted to see what it was like,” said Billings. “It was a lifestyle change for me but it definitely fit me perfectly.”
Billings, who has been with the 108th for more than five years, views her unit as a second family. She says she has learned a lot from her time in service and credits the many different medical professionals within her unit as the motivation for her deciding to enroll in nursing school at Reading Hospital, West Reading, Pa.
“I love that I’m in a medical unit because we have doctors and nurses and all those people influenced me to go to nursing school,” said Billings. “I always knew I wanted to do something in the medical field, but I didn’t know I was going to go to nursing school until I came to this unit.”
Although Billings’ contract is up next year, she plans to re-enlist and continue her military career and use the resources she has found within her unit while she continues her civilian education.
