JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – As a former command master chief, Eileen Arthur grew accustomed to counseling and onboarding Sailors in her command.

So it wasn’t a far stretch to imagine she’d succeed as a civilian human resources specialist, which she could prove with satisfied customers, but now also with the Department of the Navy Civilian HR and EEO Community Award for Excellence on May 2.

“I think it’s easy to do well when you love what you do and the people you work with,” she said. “I know it’s an individual award, but the real reward is being able to work with great people.”

In her citation, she is cited for her “flawless and dynamic customer service,” which has drawn accolades from her customers and her peers.

“When you’re helping people with issues concerning their benefits, that’s their money you’re talking about,” Arthur said. “I want to make sure things are right.

“I think it’s just, again, that military mentality of doing whatever it takes to get the job done.”

After 28 years in the Navy’s surface fleet, Arthur’s last tour was with HS-11 aboard Naval Air Station Jacksonville. After completing a master’s degree in HR, she worked for 15 months at a local VA medical center before landing her current position at Fleet Readiness Center Southeast, a Navy aviation maintenance, repair and overhaul depot.

Although her primary role is with labor and employee relations, that changed soon after she arrived when a benefits specialist went on an extended leave of absence and retired.

“It gave me a chance to learn the position,” she said. “Whatever needs to get done and however we need to do it, I’m going to help.

“If I need to go vacuum the place, I’m going to do it.”
