CAMP HUMPHREYS, Republic of Korea – The 658th Regional Support Group, the largest U.S. Army Reserve unit in the Republic of Korea, welcomed incoming commander Col. John Stibbard and honored outgoing commander Col. Harry P. Hudick with an official change of command ceremony here June 1.
The passing of the colors transfers the responsibility of the accomplishment of the units’ mission and the welfare of the troops. The flag was passed from the formation to Command Sgt. Maj. Jaybee Obusan, senior enlisted leader, who then passed the unit colors to outgoing commander Hudick. Hudick then passed the colors to the ceremony’s senior commander Brig. Gen. Douglas Anderson, 9th Mission Support Command Commanding General, who passed the colors to incoming commander Stibbard, and returned via to the formation.
“Today we say goodbye to a successful commander, Col. Harry Hudick, you are handing off a unit that is better, ready and more prepared than the one you took,” Anderson said. “I can see why that is. Because of your dedication, your focus, your diligence, your care and your love for your Soldiers.”
Hudick served in all three components of the Army, with multiple combat deployments and work humanitarian relief efforts, and has served the U.S. Army infantry, Air Defense Artillery, Military Police, becoming an expert in disaster relief management and, according to Anderson, now an “Ad Hoc” logistician because of the 658th RSG command.
The 658th RSG is the Base Operating Support Integrator in order to mission command units executing support in the Republic for Korea. Additionally, the 658th has taken on, not just being a Brigade headquarters in Korea, but also with units in Alaska, various islands in Hawaii, Guam, and Saipan, providing administrative control of the 302nd Transportation Terminal Battalion, the 124th Chaplains Detachment and assigned Title 10 units in the U.S. Army Pacific area of operations.
“Today we say hello to Col. John Stibbard, and the wonderful Army family you have,” Anderson said. Stibbard has been a part of the 100th Battalion, 442nd Infantry Regt. , 9th MSC, 4960th, 411th Engineer Battalion, and now with the 658th will continue to serve the Army Reserve of the Pacific from the command in Korea.
“The unit looks forward to having you join them. Right guy, right time, right place, right assignment,” Anderson said.
The 8th U.S. Army Band honored the ceremony with professional music accompaniment, and U.S. Army Chaplain Lt. Col. Keyong Nam gave the Benediction.
“There are three high honors all 658th Soldiers have earned and you will carry with you the rest of your lives,” Hudick said. “There is not ribbon or badge you will wear for them, you’ll never wear it on your uniform. First is your selfless service, your sacrifice to commitment, second is your unwavering willingness to don the uniform monthly, twice a year for annual training … and whenever you are mobilized. That raises you above all your civilian peers. Third, for the Soldiers who live here on the peninsula, you have freely chosen to serve, work, and actually live on the very ground on which you may one day be called upon to fight tonight. “
“Because of your hard work and dedication to duty, you are ready to fight against a combined force that will certainly prevail over any enemy,” Hudick said. “We are incomplete machines without you and your families support.”
Stibbard thanked the Soldiers of the 658th and addressed the field with enthusiasm.
“Thank you for the opportunity to lead this amazing team,” Stibbard said. “I am humbled and truly grateful for such an honor. You have all made us proud today, you look sharp, I sincerely thank you for your commitment and your sacrifices, Pride of the Pacific and Fight tonight, this is Col. Stibbard, signing in.”
