GEICO Hosts the 8th Annual Bikes for Tykes and Troops

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — GEICO hosted the 8th Annual Bikes for Tykes and Troops at the KOA Kampground in Virginia Beach, Va., April 18 and 19, benefiting the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters and USO Hampton Roads.

"We at GEICO wanted to be able to give back to the community, and we decided to show our appreciation to our service members," said Heather McDonald, a leading chairwoman from GEICO. "USO has been instrumental in helping us coordinate and plan for this weekend."

USO volunteers like retired Navy Chief Operations Spc. Don Milligon were excited about attending the event and giving back to an organization that helps thousands of service members in the area.

"USO volunteered to help run the various stations on the campgrounds so that everyone can enjoy this beautiful weekend," said Milligon. "As a retired chief, I am thrilled to give back to this organization while providing a fun place for the bikers to show off their rides."

There are nine USO centers in the Hampton Roads area with more than 750 volunteers providing support on a regular basis.

"I wanted to get out and help our fellow troops and children in need," said Army Sgt. Linda Kearon. "It helped bring the local community and military members together and strengthen the bonds we have. GEICO did a terrific job in selecting a great spot on a great weekend."

GEICO representatives were happy to have assistance from the active duty service members in the area.

"It blows my mind what our military is capable of and that they were generous to donate some of their time to help us do great things," said McDonald. "We could not have been this successful without them."

At the end of the weekend festivities, $25,000 checks were presented to both USOHR and CHKD.

The USO offers quality of life programs, family outreach and information and referral services to more than 250,000 military members and their families stationed in the Hampton Roads area.

CHKD is the only facility of its kind in Virginia, serving the medical and surgical needs of children throughout Hampton Roads, the Eastern Shore of Virginia, and northeastern North Carolina. Each year the hospital cares for more than 170,000 patients, addressing routine and complex illnesses, injuries and chronic conditions.
