The Alaska National Guard delivered the Veterans Golden Age Games torch June 5 at Moose Run Golf Course here.

The torch delivery was followed by a 1.5-mile run.

The NVGAG is a national rehabilitation program designed to improve the quality of life for older veterans by encouraging the incorporation of physical activities and sports into daily life.

The event kicked off with pararescuemen from the Air Guard’s 212th Rescue Squadron rappelling with the torch from an Alaska Army National Guard UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter from 1st Battalion, 207th Aviation Regiment, to commence this national, annual event in support of veterans.

The PJs and their squadron’s military service dog, named TOML, which stand for “That Others May Live,” carried the torch and led the run down Arctic Valley Road.

Alaska Air National Guard Staff Sgt. Tom McArthur with the 212th Rescue Squadron was the first PJ at the even to carry the torch after rappelling from the helicopter. McArthur passed the torch to Master Sgt. Chris Bowerfind, who led the run with TOML.

This year marks the 33rd NVGAG, which is hosted by the Alaska VA this year.

Military members, families, veterans and community members were invited to participate in the Veterans Golden Age Games fun run.
