LAND FORCES COMBAT TRAINING CENTER GETICA, CINCU, Romania – Fifty-four Soldiers with the Alaska Army National Guard’s 207th Engineer Utility Detachment participated in exercise Resolute Castle 2019 at Cincu, Romania from May 1-21.

Resolute Castle is a multi-national, joint exercise with real-world outputs of completed construction projects that build and enhance training capabilities around Eastern Europe.

Soldiers involved in RC19 worked on multiple projects in the training area. The main work sites were the 350-meter Mobile Armored Target, the Cherry Hill entry control point road and the foundation for a multipurpose building.

At the 350 MAT site, engineers removed excess water and mud covering the access road using various heavy machinery, such as an excavator. They then cut, moved and laid more than 3,000 square meters of geomat soil-retention material, which was later covered in a layer of rocks.

The main mission for the 350 MAT site was to construct a storm drainage mitigation system, which the engineers completed by digging a 375-meter-long V-ditch along the upper side of the MAT.

At Cherry Hill, Soldiers operated rollers, graders, bull dozers and other heavy equipment to repair the road and make the base accessible from an additional entry point.

The multipurpose building site required the removal of excess water and mud prior to the completion of exercise goals as well. The site was then covered in dump truck loads of dirt and packed down by a roller. The Soldiers then dug ditches on all sides of the area where they installed a footer made of rebar and wood in preparation for a layer of concrete.

Soldiers in the woodshop cut pieces for the footer that was used in the multipurpose building area and they built stools and tables for each of the sites, a small shelter for the lumberyard and more.

During the exercise, many of the Alaska Guardsmen cross-trained and were assigned duties outside of their normal military occupations or sections. They were licensed on various new pieces of equipment, including dump trucks, rollers and graders. According to Sgt. 1st Class Jack Carlson, the lead non-commissioned officer of the 207th unit members involved in the exercise, a total of more than 1,992 hours of drivers training was conducted and 41 drivers were licensed on one or more new vehicles.

Additionally, during the operations involving vehicles, Soldiers performed preventive maintenance checks and services on vehicles. A total of more than 5,540 gallons of fuel was used during the duration of the exercise. Section leaders at the 350 MAT and the multipurpose building sites conducted night operations to improve training and work efficiency.

The maintenance section completed maintenance on more than 50 general and construction vehicles and equipment and repaired 41 vehicles with critical maintenance faults, putting them in 100-percent operational capacity to support efficiency of continuous operations.

Capt. James Lewis, commander of the 207th EUD, said all of the Soldiers excelled during their 22-day rotation in RC19 despite the challenges of multiple operational variables which inhibited training and productivity.

Some of the Soldiers who were part of the exercise were volunteers from other units, such as the 297th Regional Support Group and the 207th Aviation Regiment.
