    Story by Sgt. Malcolm Cohens-Ashley

94th Army Air and Missile Defense Command

An air defense battle management system operator assigned to the 94th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, Spc. Marian Bermudeznieves, graduated from Basic Leader Course and earned her way to commandants list on April 12, 2019, at Weyland Field, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Bermudeznieves, a native of a small town called Anones in Naranjito, Puerto Rico, was brought up in a family oriented household. Her father serves as a police chief on the island of Puerto Rico and both of her grand fathers served in the U.S. Army. Her grand fathers are WWII and Vietnam Veterans.

With service to others already apart of her lineage, there was no surprise that she too one day would answer the call of duty in the U.S. Army.

“I always wanted to honor them and follow their steps,” she said.

Prior to joining the United States Army, she worked as an office manager for a loan company and earned two degrees; one in Accounting and the other in Finance. In September 2016, she began to tread a similar path of those in her family and joined the United States Army.

In addition to the inspiration from the family she was born into, she has also found new inspiration from the family she has created.

“Knowing that my boys look at me with such pride and want to follow my footsteps, keeps me going,” she stated.

Earning her way onto commandants list for BLC class was not only a testament to her dedication, her career, but also to leading the way for others to follow. She has set a great example thus far and she plans to continue to blaze a path to excellence in her future endeavors.

“I always think about the future and what can I provide to make it better and safer,” she remarked. “I have two boys to watch for and showing them that with hard work, dedication and motivation, everything is possible.”
