COLUMBUS, Ohio (May 30, 2019) – Aliyah and Olivia Holt are twins who have done almost everything together their entire lives. After graduating from Reynoldsburg High School, they continued that trend and made the honorable decision to enlist in the United States Navy.

Aliyah, older by only a minute, joined the Navy’s delayed entry program (DEP) back in February but knew joining the service was something she wanted to do years before.

“I knew in my freshman year that I was going to join the military but my sister was still unsure,” said Aliyah. “I wanted to do something different and the Navy welcomed me with open arms so I immediately felt a bond with them.”

Olivia followed suit and joined DEP in April because she knew of the many opportunities a career with the Navy offered.

“The military was always in the back of my mind but in my junior year, I decided I’d go along with my sister and sign up and my sister sort of helped sway me to choose the Navy,” said Olivia. “We didn’t want to get stuck in a job we might not like and knew that the Navy had a lot of job opportunities.”

During the Navy’s DEP, the twins along with fellow future Sailors spend a significant amount of time training with their Navy mentors, or on-boarders, and learn military fundamentals such as etiquette, chain of command and rank structure.

“DEP is helping us become more professional,” said Aliyah. “We know the Navy will be challenging but the Sailors here are helping us get ready for it and we are definitely looking forward to it.”

Although Aliyah was born first, Olivia will be the first to join the Navy ranks as she leaves for recruit training in early June and Aliyah departs in mid-September. Upon graduation from their eight-week indoctrination to the Navy, Aliyah and Olivia will attend boatswain’s mate and air crewman apprenticeship schools. Their long-term goals include travel and attending the University of Toledo.

“Even though we are twins, we are each our own people, said Aliyah. “We compete with one another but at the end of the day, we help each other out and are great pals.”
