From military working dog demonstrations to remembrance ceremonies, 27th SOSFS members honored law enforcement by showcasing modern capabilities and respect for the past.
“We were able to celebrate what it means to be a law enforcement officer,” Said Tech. Sgt. Aliccia Curry, 27th SOSFS noncommissioned officer in charge of standardization and evaluation. “Virtually every defender in our career field has experienced a loss and this is our time to honor the sacrifices they made for us.”
Every defender at Cannon serves to defend as “Protectors of the Force.” Often seen patrolling or at security gates, these Airmen are charged with putting others’ lives ahead of their own at any given time. This devotion to excellence is unique at Cannon, according to Curry.
“The fellowship of this unit is second-to-none that I know of in the Air Force,” Curry said. “Our capabilities encompass everything from law enforcement protecting personnel in a small community to protecting Air Force Special Operations Command resources.”
Throughout the week, events such as military working dog demos and Deployed Aircraft Ground Response Element workouts helped display this fellowship and devotion to staying relevant and ready. Accompanying these spectacles were more somber events such as a 24-hour vigil run, where members from Cannon constantly kept the Thin Blue Line flag up in the air while on the base track. Finally, the week ended with a retreat ceremony.
During the retreat, the names of defenders who lost their lives on duty were read aloud to the small crowd and ample-sized 27th SOSFS formation.
“The retreat ceremony provides us an opportunity to remember those brothers and sisters in law enforcement that have paid the ultimate price for our safety,” said Maj. Brenton Pomeroy, 27th SOSFS commander. “Many of our defenders and Office of Special Investigation agents have served with those that we memorialized in the retreat ceremony.”
President John F. Kennedy signed the bill into law Oct. 1, 1962 to make Peace Officers Memorial Day a federal observance May 15 every year. Although there may only be one day each year devoted to police and peace officers, the memories of these celebrations live long in the minds of those like Curry.
“Every Police Week is memorable and has a great significance,” Curry explained. “Not only does it represent the bond that law enforcement share with each other, but it also gives us time to reflect on those that we lost. Police week makes me proud to be a defender and be in law enforcement.”
