BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- Hundreds of dedicated patriots paid their respects to the fallen service members of the U.S. Armed Forces during a rainy Memorial Day celebration at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, May 27, 2019.
"Democracy is not a fair weather sport," said Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, also retired Army National Guard command sergeant major, during his rousing speech to the living in the middle of 180,000 graves, "Democracy is not for the faint of heart.”
The sentiment giving all was echoed by Maj. Gen. Jody J. Daniels when she asked Gold Star families in the audience to stand, so their loved ones could be recognized, and continued with the stories of men that fought and lost their lives to help their fellow Service Members fight to victory during both World War II and the Korean War.
“The cost in lives on D-Day was high. More than 9,000 Allied Soldiers were killed or wounded, but their sacrifice allowed more than 100,000 Soldiers to begin the slow, hard slog across Europe, to defeat Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich,” said Maj. Gen. Jody J. Daniels, 88th Readiness Division commanding general.
The ceremony attended by U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, ended with the Fort Snelling Memorial Rifle Squad firing a 21-gun salute.
