Nitze Performs MEDEVAC of Polish Merchant

GULF OF ADEN (May 25, 2019) – The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Nitze (DDG 94) assisted with the medical evacuation of a Polish merchant mariner from the French-flagged motor vessel Jules Verne, May 25.
An MH-60R Sea Hawk Helicopter assigned to the “Grandmasters” of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 46 flew the patient to Nitze after Commander Task force (CTF) 55 requested a Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) extraction.
“My crew responded to this mission expeditiously in the spirit of rendering immediate assistance to mariners in distress, from the air detachment preparing the helo, to the Sailors who launched the helo,” said Cmdr. Zoe Arantz, commanding officer aboard Nitze. “Once aboard, my independent duty corpsman immediately went to work transporting the patient to the ship’s main medical in order to better assess his medical condition.”
The patient left Nitze in good condition and was transferred to the expeditionary mobile base USS Lewis B. Puller (ESB-3) for further medical attention.
Nitze is a part of the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group currently deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet areas of operations in support of naval operations to ensure maritime stability and security in the Central Region, connecting the Mediterranean and Pacific through the Western Indian Ocean and three strategic check points.
