NEW YORK -- Members of the Staten Island community came out to support and celebrate the sea services during an event at Miller Park as a part of the 31st annual Fleet Week New York, May 21.

The event served as an opportunity for citizens of all ages, including many students from the area’s schools, to meet and interact with members of armed forces. Features included an explosive ordnance disposal team fast-rope and bomb disposal robot demonstration, aircraft displays, a virtual reality experience, a Coast Guard display and a performance by the United States Fleet Forces Brass Band.

“We love playing for the kids and connecting with students and community members who don’t normally get to see the Navy,” said Musician 2nd Class Micah Lewis, tenor saxophone player with the group. “Playing the music is a blast, but the best thing about performing in a situation like this is seeing people’s smiles and connecting with them on that personal level.”

The Staten Island community showed their support in force with more than one thousand confirmed visitors taking part in the wide range of outdoor events -- trying a hand in one of the two pull-up competitions, relaxing around the local food trucks or getting hands-on experience with cutting edge military equipment.

“The kid’s favorite part so far has been the robots,” said Christine Letona, Public School 54 parent and chaperone for the students. “It’s all exciting for them - at first they seem scared and don’t want to try, but then I can’t get them away from it!”

Also in attendance were representatives from the New York Police Department and New York City Fire Department, keeping a watchful eye on their community. Though safety was their primary concern, some found themselves as part of the event as local students took the opportunity to learn about their jobs and even try on some of the equipment.

“We support our military and do everything we can to help keep these events safe,” said Chief Mark Egan, New York City Fire Department Division 8.

“We’re both local Staten Islanders and events like these mean a lot to the community and the kids love it,” added Chief Bill Simpson, New York City Fire Department Battalion 21. “We’re here to make sure everyone stays safe.”

Fleet Week New York, now in its 31st year, is the city’s time-honored celebration of the sea services. It is an unparalleled opportunity for the citizens of New York and the surrounding tri-state area to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, as well as witness firsthand the latest capabilities of today’s maritime services.
