Fire and Emergency Services department has received their new equipment to increase their impact in Violent Incident Response and Traumatic Injury Treatment in the local community and aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, Calif.

“The new equipment includes Mobilize Rescue Systems’ Compact Rescue System and the Public Access Rescue Station,” said Ryan Tworek, deputy fire chief with FES aboard base. “This new equipment is organized for the responders and contained in a chest-pack which is secured to their gear. The public access station comes with access to the Mobilize Rescue App for untrained bystanders who may be used to assist with certain situations.”

The compact rescue systems will be issued to Fire and Emergency Services responders as part of their standard Personal Protection Equipment when responding to violent incidents. The Public Access Station will be installed in buildings around the installations, much like Automated External Defibrillators, and used for the initial immediate treatment of a traumatic injury.

According to the National Trauma Institute, traumatic injury is the #1 cause of death for ages 1-46, as opposed to heart disease (11 percent) and cancer (12 percent).

“What emergencies should the fire department be prepared for?” asked Paul Purdy, FES fire chief. “Our focus is often on cardiac arrest, but sudden cardiac arrest represents half a percent of the major emergencies that occur each year, which is why approximately 5 to 10 million Automated External Defibrillators have been installed worldwide. What about the other 99.5 percent of medical emergencies?

With an estimated 30,000 preventable traumatic deaths taking place each year, MCLB Barstow Fire and Emergency Services needs to continue to be prepared to manage traumatic injuries and more.”

The Compact Rescue Systems include supplies to effectively treat severe bleeding, opiate overdoses, hypothermia, seizures, choking, trouble breathing, as well as the need for cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and rescue breathing for children and infants.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, an average of 551 workers per year were killed as the result of work-related homicides and 78 percent of those were the result of shootings.

“Each of the Public Access Rescue Stations’ carrying cases includes four kits (iPAKs) which can be accessed by individuals in case of an emergency,” Tworek said. “The Mobilize Rescue App is quick and easy to use, for those who may not have the experience that our highly trained first responders have. As they’re accessing the kit, they can also access the app for ‘just-in-time’ training and instructions to help bystanders save lives, too.”

The supplies are even color-coded and numbered to match the app’s instructions precisely. “The intent is to encourage directors to get their staff trained on this new public access equipment, so that they can be safety champions and experts, potentially saving lives, should an emergency occur,” Tworek said. “While firefighters, paramedics and law enforcement officers are en route, someone can already be taking steps to manage a critical medical incident.”

The Mobilize Rescue Systems allow organizations such as MCLB Barstow’s FES personnel to be better equipped to efficiently and effectively manage emergencies.

“The Public Access Stations which will be installed in the buildings around the installations, employees can use what’s provided for the initial, immediate treatment, to assist those who may be injured or suffering some other medical emergency prior to Fire and Emergency Services arrival,” Purdy said. “By gaining the equipment, and encouraging training, people may just save lives.
