Federal Reserve Bank, Army Reserve honor fallen service members

PHILADELPHIA – The Federal Reserve Bank hosted its third-annual Memorial Day remembrance ceremony May 23 at its headquarters here to honor those men and women in uniform who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.

Maj. Vic Aviles, G-3 operations officer for the U.S. Army Reserve’s 99th Readiness Division headquartered on Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey, served as guest speaker for the event.

“Since the founding of our nation, more than 42 million Americans have stepped forward to serve their country in its hour of need, and more than a million died so their children and ours could live in liberty,” Aviles said. “They came from every corner of America, and every walk of life – each different, each an individual who made a choice, yet all shared the same dream of freedom that gave birth to our nation and carried the light of liberty to millions across the globe.”

“Events like this make sure we take the time to honor the sacrifice of America’s fallen and to really think about what it means to give your life in service to your country,” said Patrick Harker, president, Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. “It makes us think about everyone who risks making that same sacrifice, and the incredibly profound commitment of our military men and women.”

The event included a Missing Man Table ceremony conducted by the Federal Reserve Police, which paid tribute to the nation’s fallen, missing and imprisoned military service members.

“On this day, and every Memorial Day to come, we will remember,” Aviles promised.
