GOWEN FIELD, Idaho - The Idaho National Guard hosted its annual Memorial Day ceremony at the Gowen Field Memorial Park on May 22 in honor of fallen service members. Bricks dedicated to past and present service members were placed at the park during the ceremony.
The event included a joint Idaho National Guard color guard, singing of the National Anthem, a cannon salute by the Idaho Military Museum and the playing of Taps on bugle by Staff Sgt. Michael Robinett of the 25th Army Band. Command Chief Master Sgt. Sid Brown, Idaho Air National Guard state command chief, was the event’s speaker.
“For your tomorrow, we gave our today,” said Brown. "This is the epitaph written on the tombstone of a fallen American warrior. It’s why it’s important this Memorial Day to reflect upon the ‘tomorrows’ left to us by thousands of brave and selfless National Guardsmen and women and service members who paid the ultimate sacrifice fighting our nation’s wars."
Memorial Day is the one day each year set aside to remember those who Abraham Lincoln observed “gave the last, full measure of devotion.”
The event was well attended by many guests from our community, including veterans from the Idaho State Veterans Home.
