Every year the Defense Supply Center Columbus participates in National Police Week with various observances and events on the installation in honor of the Police Officers who serve and protect the base.
This year’s activities concluded with a cookout and the DSCC Police receiving a custom designed coin from the American Federation of Government Employees 1148 Union recognizing their efforts throughout the year for Police Week. The coin presentation is a part of a five-year tradition.
“We’re appreciative of the men and women who are serving in the capacity and we want to recognize them, especially during their time to be recognized like Police Week,” said Darrrell Kelso, a stewart for AFGE 1148. “We definitely need to recognize the police officers who protect us here, not just the union, but all of the associates and children on base as a whole.”
The design of the coin was a collaboration between the DSCC Police Officer’s counsel committee and the police leadership. Police Lt. Brodi Moeller was the lead for the design and incorporated many elements in the coin that hold significance to the police officers.
“Each year we like to honor officers in the State of Ohio,” Moeller said. “The coin is one way we do this. We would love to honor all the fallen officers across America but there are just too many.”
The front of the coin displays the Columbus skyline, the back depicts Archangel Michael, the patron angel for police, and four names of fallen officers from Ohio. The two names on the right, Anthony Morelli and Eric Joering, are officers from the neighboring town of Westerville, Ohio. On the left are Matthew Mazany and Vu Ngyen from Cleveland, Ohio.
DSCC displayed the American Flag at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on May 15 in appreciation of law enforcement’s hard work and dedication as outlined in the President’s proclamation honoring Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week.
Additionally, numerous events took place during the week honoring the officers on base.
The DSCC Police Department kicked-off the week with a wreath laying event conducted at the Police and Fire Memorial May 13.
On May 14 the DSCC Dispatch conducted a moment of silence for all Police shifts.
The following day the police department participated in a pizza party sponsored by Morale, Welfare and Recreation’s Child Development Center. During the festivities, police personnel interacted with children at the center and provided police stickers and coloring books.
Wrapping up activities May 16 the Police Department had a cookout in which police management grilled and served hamburgers, hotdogs and chicken for all shifts. During the picnic the union presented the coins.
“It’s about community involvement and support,” said Police Captain Harry Salcone. “It’s their thank you to us and it’s a big hit.”
