Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti (CLDJ), held a change of command ceremony May 21, at the base multipurpose facility.
Capt. Kenneth C. Crowe, relieved Capt. Charles J. DeGilio as the CLDJ commanding officer.
Capt. Scott Mulvehill, chief of staff, Navy Region Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia served as guest speaker. Mulvehill told the more than 300 attendees that the change of command carries with it a great responsibility to take care of what is in under ones care. He said DeGilio demonstrated that responsibility in a challenging and demanding environment.
“Capt. DeGilio’s tour has been characterized by three key elements: He took care of his tenant commands, he took care of his personnel and he took care of the mission,” Mulvehill said. “This was a tough task and he executed it flawlessly.”
DeGilio served as commanding officer for the only permanent U.S. military base on the continent of Africa from May 2018 to May 2019.
He said he will leave CLDJ with new friendships and a greater understanding of the world.
"I am humbled and honored by the awesome responsibility of having led the men and women of Camp Lemonnier; their performance was nothing short of astounding,” DeGilio said. “I know Capt. Crowe will be an outstanding CO and he will lead CLDJ into new horizons.”
DeGilio was awarded the Legion of Merit during the ceremony.
Crowe, former Navy Reserve deputy director of Navy staff at the Pentagon, assumes command of an installation with 5,000 military and civilian personnel onboard.
Crowe said he is privileged to lead the men and women of the Armed Forces at Camp Lemonnier and looks forward to preserving the mission of the base.
“I very much appreciate the people of Djibouti for hosting our presence,” Crowe said. “Along with our partner nations, we hope to maintain a region of security and stability.”
DeGilio is scheduled to retire in June 2019 after more than 30 years of distinguished service.
Camp Lemonnier is an operationally-focused shore installation that enables U.S., allied and partner nation forces to be where and when they are needed to ensure security and stability in Europe, Africa and Southwest Asia.
The mission of Camp Lemonnier is to enable joint warfighters operating forward and to reinforce the relationship between the United States and Djibouti by conducting five key shore missions – air operations, port operations, security, safety and quality of life – and providing core mission enablers such as fuel, water and power for tenant commands, transient U.S. assets and individual service members.
