U.S. Marines with 3rd Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, participate in the Artillery Relocation Training Program 19-1 at the Combined Arms Training Center, Camp Fuji, Japan, April 12-May 6, 2019.
ARTP is a pre-planned training event that is held multiple times a year. It allows the Marines to conduct essential live-fire training outside of Okinawa to increase their combat readiness and support the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security.
This training is an opportunity for Marines to utilize their warfighting skills in realistic combat scenarios at CATC Fuji.
“One of my favorite things about being out here is hearing the sound of artillery,” said U.S. Marine Sgt. Jaylen Miller, an assistant operations chief with 3rd Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. “It’s one of the few times throughout the year that we get to get down and get dirty.”
Upon receiving a fire mission, Marines prepare an M777 howitzer in order to accurately fire rounds down range. They ensure projectiles are safe to fire and adjust the cannon to confirm that the rounds will land on target.
While the main focus of ARTP is artillery fire, there are other components which contribute to mission success. Marines from various specialties are in charge of conducting resupply runs, setting up communications, preparing and serving food, and providing local security.
“There are a lot of moving parts,” said Gunnery Sgt. Samuel Reyes, a logistics chief with 3rd Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. “I’m in charge of the logistics and supplies and making sure everyone has what they need to complete each task tactically and proficiently.”
Training in CATC Fuji exposes Marines to austerer environments which allows them to increase their warfighting capabilities and builds relations with our treaty ally.
The Artillery Relocation Training Program is a Japanese-funded exercise which has been occurring for over two decades and provides the Marines with the opportunity to conduct live-fire training in Japan.
