BUFFALO, NY– The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District has awarded a $2.486 Million contract for the sand nourishment of Presque Isle, located in Erie, Pennsylvania.

The contract was awarded to PPW Builders, Inc., based in Cleveland, Ohio on April 29, 2019. The contractor is anticipated to start work in June 2019 with approximately 68,000 cubic yards of sand to be placed between Beach 5 to Beach 10.

"Presque Isle State Park is a major part of Erie's identity. Visited by millions of tourists from all over the world each year, it is also a bedrock of Erie's economy,” said Representative Mike Kelly. “I've been working with President Trump and the Army Corps of Engineers to make sure that Presque Isle gets the sand replenishment it needs to remain open and available to the residents of Erie and tourists. Thank you to the Army Corps for beginning work on this project, which will go a long way toward preserving Presque Isle as the national treasure we know it to be for generations to come."

Beach nourishment at Presque Isle is subject to the availability of funds and when sufficient funding is in place. Each year the peninsula needs approximately 55,000 tons of additional sand to offset impacts of annual erosion. Since the construction of the 55 offshore rubble mound breakwaters, the annual nourishment requirement has decreased by 75 percent.

“This contract award will provide the nourishment needed to help stabilize Presque Isle, while providing ample recreational opportunity to the public,” said Lt. Col. Jason Toth, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District. “Buffalo District greatly appreciates the continued support from the public and the advocacy of Representative Kelly to ensure these projects can occur, supporting the needs of the American people.”

Presque Isle is a 3112-acre long peninsula composed of sand in Lake Erie and provides ample habitat for migratory shorebirds and endangered species, along with bank stabilization and recreational opportunities to all people who visit there.
