Black Rock Lock repairs completed, open for navigation

Buffalo, NY – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District completed repairs to the gates and lock anchorages of the Black Rock Lock, after it closed in late November for planned gate lock anchorage repairs.

“Buffalo District is proud of the efforts put forth by the team that completed the repairs on the Black Rock Lock this winter, and is excited to open the lock in time for the 2019 navigation season,” said Lt. Col. Jason Toth, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District commander. “More repairs will be need to be done in the future. So we greatly appreciate the users of the navigation channels patience for the repairs that occurred this year, and the repairs to come.”

The Black Rock Lock hours and dates for the 2019 navigation season are as follows:

01 January – 15 May Closed for repairs
15 May - 14 September (Extended Season) 8:00 am - 10:00 pm
Weekdays
11:00 am - 10:00 pm
Weekends
15 September - 26 October 8:00 am - 4:00 pm
7 days per week
27 October - 15 November 8:00 am - 4:00 pm
Monday – Friday
15 November – 31 December Closed for repairs

Commercial traffic will be accommodated on a 24-hour basis with prior notification.

The Black Rock Lock and the Black Rock Channel provide safe passage for vessels to travel between Buffalo Harbor and Tonawanda Harbor around the reefs, rapids and fast currents that exist in the upstream portion of the Niagara River.

The lock is 104-years old and will need future repairs, planned for the winter of 2019-20. The lock provides $3.94 million in economic benefits to Buffalo Harbor annually.
