Barstow-area dignitaries joined men and women of faith at a breakfast celebrating the National Day of Prayer aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, California, May 2.
The Prayer Breakfast, held at the Route 66 Café aboard the base, was opened by U.S. Navy LT Chad Laughery, chaplain, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, with a prayer of grace for the food served at the event and to begin the round of guests leading prayers.
“Is prayer your steering wheel or your spare tire,” Laughery asked, quoting from Holocaust author Corrie ten Boom’s writings. Prayer should lead your life, he explained, not be a last resort to fix things.
Pastor Bushwan Carpenter, Total Restoration Church, Barstow, during a prayer for the United States, praised God for “causing a little infant nation composed of all different people and groups to come together under one flag.”
“Thank you for all of our leaders present at this gathering this morning,” Dr. Wilbert Artis, operations officer, Marine Corps Community Services, prayed. “Meet with them, guide them and cover them as they make important decisions that will affect all the members of our nation, our organization and our community.”
“We commend to your gracious care and keeping all of the men and women of the Armed Forces at home and abroad,” prayed Juan Rivera, S-6 communications director, MCLBB. “Grant them your heavenly grace day to day, strengthen them through trials and tribulations, give them courage to face the perils that beset them, and grant them a sense of your abiding presence, wherever they may be.”
Special guest, City of Barstow Mayor Julie Hackbarth-McIntyre, spoke at the event, remembering how playing gospel hymns on the piano during the funeral service for her father and prayer helped her get through the day and eventually helped her cope with his passing.
”The Earth shall soon dissolve like snow, the sun forebear to shine, but God, who called me here below shall be ever mine, ” Hackbarth-McIntyre concluded her remarks with a verse from the hymn “Amazing Grace.”
The National Day of Prayer was officially signed into law in 1952 by order of President Harry Truman, and requires the current president to sign a proclamation urging all Americans to pray on this day each year. The date is always the first Thursday in May, according to the National Day of Prayer organization Website.
