NEWPORT, R.I. — Catherine Anders, head of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport’s Staffing and Classification Branch in the Human Resources Division, was recently selected for the Providence Business News (PBN) 2019 Business Women Award in the Technical Services Women to Watch category.

The PBN Business Women Awards program honors the success of women in a variety of industries and recognizes younger, professional women to watch as well as industry leaders. This is the fourth time in six years a NUWC Newport woman has won a PBN award.

With her experience as a human resources specialist with the Department of the Army and Department of Homeland Security, Anders, a resident of Bristol, Rhode Island, has quickly earned wide respect from her staff and supervisors. As lead workforce specialist, Anders directs the classification of position descriptions by utilizing project management skills and mentoring and teaching her employees refined classification skills.

From the time she joined NUWC Newport’s Human Resources Division three years ago, Anders has fostered excellence at the highest level, instilling in her team the need for efficiency and doing it right the first time, according to her award citation.

One of the most significant achievements throughout her 11-year career has been Anders’ successful efforts to help veterans find employment following their return from active duty. Using a variety of hiring programs, including the Wounded Warrior Project, she has been able to match qualified veterans to civilian career opportunities. This often is the first step for veterans toward a successful return to civilian life.

Anders and honorees from around the region will be recognized at the upcoming PBN Business Women Awards ceremony on May 23 in Providence.

NUWC Division Newport, part of the Naval Sea System Command, is one of two divisions of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center. NUWC Division Newport’s mission is to provide research, development, test and evaluation, engineering and fleet support for submarines, autonomous underwater systems, undersea offensive and defensive weapons systems, and countermeasures. NUWC’s other division is located in Keyport, Washington.
