USINDOPACOM Attends Southeast Asia Strategic Multilateral Dialogue on Biosecurity

U.S. Indo Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM) Surgeon, Rear Adm. Louis Tripoli, attended the Southeast Asia Strategic Multilateral Dialogue on Biosecurity in Phuket, Thailand April 29 – May 1, 2019.

This is Tripoli’s first time attending the multilateral dialogue since becoming the USINDOPACOM surgeon last year. The visit highlights USINDOPACOM’s commitment to working with its partners in Southeast Asia to assist with strengthening the ability to prevent, detect, and respond to natural, deliberate, and accidental biological threats throughout the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.

“The people of the Indo-Pacific face rising health challenges at a time when resources are insufficient to meet them, which threatens the stability of the region and its biosecurity,” said Tripoli. “USINDOPACOM is working with our allies and partners and the whole of the U.S. government to find sustainable solutions to these challenges.”

The event was hosted by the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security and the Department of Disease Control, Thailand Ministry of Public Health. This conference supports USINDOPACOM efforts to the Global Health Security Agenda, which the USG strongly supports. It demonstrates USINDOPACOM’s commitment to assisting all nations in the region to achieve the goals of the Global Health Security Agenda through multi-sectoral and multi-stakeholder engagement.

Established in 2014, the Strategic Multilateral Dialogue on Biosecurity now includes participants from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and the United States.

This dialogue was initiated to engage high-level current and former government officials, and nongovernmental experts and stakeholders in candid discussions about the priorities, challenges, and developments related to biosecurity risks in Southeast Asia and the broader Indo-Asia-Pacific region.

Tripoli said, “Our priorities are to work with our allies and partners in Southeast Asia to strengthen the regional healthcare infrastructure and health education to facilitate greater autonomy. In a deliberate and sustainable way, we are committed to not only bringing an enhanced medical capability to this vital region, but also to working to improve the capabilities and interoperability of partner nations and their respective health agencies.”
