    Naval Medical Center - Portsmouth

Naval Medical Center Portsmouth’s (NMCP) Library Services Department, American Red Cross volunteers and the Oak Leaf Club present a historical photobook to Capt. Christopher Culp, NMCP’s commanding officer, on May 1. The photobook will be kept in the front office of NMCP’s historic Building 1.

The photobook honors Norfolk Naval Hospital, known now as the historic Building 1 of NMCP, which has served on Hospital Point in Portsmouth, Virginia since 1830. The NMCP Library Services Department staff and the American Red Cross command history volunteers compiled and edited the book in 2018 and it is being presented to the Command Suite through the generous support of the Oak Leaf Club to offer an overview of the rich history of Building 1 for all visitors.

Jane Pellegrino, department head of Library Services Department, and who helped spearhead the project, wanted to present the book to Capt. Culp before he left the command because of how many combined years he has served at the command and his fascination with all the history behind it.

“He has a long interest in the history of the building,” Pellegrino said. “We thought he would especially enjoy the fact that there is an explanation in the front office to show the history of the building to any of the visitors. The whole idea is that we have a coffee table type book where people can pick it up to look into a little bit about the history of the building.”

Culp spoke about how captivating it is to work out of such a historic building that is connected to the contemporary military treatment facility of our time.

“There is just nothing quite like working in this building,” Culp said. “The history of this place just speaks to you every day, and then you walk 100 yards that way and you are in the most modern state-of-the-art facility that we could ever have.”

He went on to praise the photobook saying that it will be a perfect addition to archiving the history of the command.

“All of these are the pictures that greet us as we walk through the library and the decks here,” Culp said. “All consolidated into this book with the narrative and the attribution. This is amazing.”

As the U.S. Navy's oldest, continuously-operating military hospital since 1830, Naval Medical Center Portsmouth proudly serves past and present military members and their families. The nationally-acclaimed, state-of-the-art medical center, along with the area's 10 branch health and TRICARE Prime Clinics, provide care for the Hampton Roads area. The medical center also supports premier research and teaching programs designed to prepare new doctors, nurses and hospital corpsman for future roles in healing and wellness.
