ILLESHEIM, Germany -- “This run is a fun way of raising awareness about the Sexual Harassment and Assault Response Prevention program,” said 2nd Lt. Nicole McCombs, an automotive logistical specialist from Fort Riley, Kansas, with Alpha Company, 601st Aviation Support Battalion.
“Rather than doing a lecture or seminar, where people are falling asleep or not paying attention.”

The 1st Combat Aviation Brigade ended the Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention month of April with a 5K run to raise awareness for the SHARP program at Storck Barracks, Illesheim, Germany April 27.

“It helps boost morale and gives Soldiers a fun way to get out of the barracks, while also improving their physical fitness,” said McCombs.

Before the run, Soldiers gathered and enjoyed music while they socialized and stretched near the start and finish line. The 1st CAB Equal Opportunity and SHARP representatives hosted the registration process, held inside the Morale and Welfare Recreation gym, where SHARP embellished free water bottles, towels, and lanyards were made available for the runners. The representatives were also available to answer any questions and provide assistance to Soldiers, as they register for the run.

The Army has programs dedicated to help victims or anyone affected by sexual assault and or harassment.

“While we’re deployed, it’s good to have the Soldiers aware of SHARP and EO readiness so that they know that it’s not just done in garrison back home, it’s something taken serious no matter where you’re located at,” said Sgt. 1st Class Michael Mayo, Sexual Assault and Response Coordinator for 1st CAB.

“You should always be looking out for your Soldiers and the community around you,” said Sgt. 1st Class Mayo.

The 5K run gave the Soldiers a bit of friendly competition, as trophies were given out to the winners of each gender and age group at the end of the run. The overall winners for the female and male runners were also given a 1st CAB coin by Col. Chris Black and Command Sgt. Maj. Scott Nutter, 1st Combat Aviation Brigade leadership.

“Whether at home or abroad, it’s important that Soldiers continue to uphold the values of the Army SHARP program,” said McCombs.
