PORT ARTHUR, Texas (April 19, 2019) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, is hosting an open house for the newly reconstructed resident office in Port Arthur on April 26, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Port Arthur Resident office, located at 201 Pleasure Pier Blvd, Pleasure Island, Port Arthur, Texas. The Corps encourages interested members of the public to attend the open house to meet the staff and learn more about the USACE Galveston District mission.
After the Port Arthur Resident office was devastated by Hurricane Ike in 2008, USACE staff worked out of a temporary location while a construction contract was awarded.
“Being back in our previous location on Pleasure Island is important because we are now located contiguous to our mission, which is the Sabine-Neches waterway,” said Tim White, Port Arthur resident engineer. “We are excited to be back into this location and to work with the community and our stakeholders. We want them to come by and see our new office building and have a few refreshments.”
The Corps’ Port Arthur Resident Office monitors and maintains approximately 80 miles of the Sabine Neches deep draft channel, up to the Port of Beaumont, said White.
The Port Arthur Resident Office’s primary mission focus includes providing construction management, quality assurance, and technical expertise in support of navigation and construction projects for approximately 120 miles of federally-authorized channels.
“Our navigation mission includes monitoring and maintaining approximately 40 miles of shallow draft channels including the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway from Port Arthur to High Island,” said White. “Our navigation mission also consists of work on various types of projects including maintenance dredging of channels, deepening and widening of channels, erosion protection, beach nourishment, jetty construction and rehabilitation, habitat restoration and creation.”
The USACE Galveston District was established in 1880 as the first engineer district in Texas to oversee river and harbor improvements. The district is directly responsible for maintaining more than 1,000 miles of channel, including 270 miles of deep draft and 750 miles of shallow draft as well as the Colorado River Locks and Brazos River Floodgates.
