CONCORD, Mass. – Repair work on the Bourne Bridge, spanning the Cape Cod Canal in Bourne, Mass., is proceeding on schedule, according to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District officials.

The contractor anticipates beginning the next phase of the repair work on or about the afternoon of Wednesday, April 17, 2019. During this phase, sidewalk access to cross the bridge will be closed for safety reasons as the contractor will be repairing the walking surface.

Pedestrians and bicyclists who intend to use the bridge sidewalk for crossings are advised to seek alternate routes or use alternate means of crossing such as public transportation, ride share, or vehicle for hire services until this phase of rehabilitation work is completed. Barring unforeseen complications, the sidewalk will remain closed for approximately 2 ½ weeks

During this time, travel lanes are reduced to ONE LANE OF TRAFFIC IN EACH DIRECTION AND NO WIDE LOADS are permitted to cross the bridge.

State and local police will be on duty at all times work is being performed to assist the motoring public.

This bridge work is critical to maintaining the structural integrity of the bridges, which are a vital component to the transportation system of Cape Cod, the Islands and southeastern Massachusetts.

Traffic signs, message boards and bridge work alert emails are used to help inform motorists about pending lane restrictions and bridge work. To sign up for bridge work alert emails send an email to CapeCodCanalBridges@usace.army.mil with the subject title “Bridge Work Alerts.” An email alert is sent when there is a major change to the bridge work status or schedule.
