The Bloody Hundredth supported Exercise Frisian Flag by refueling F-16s from the Royal Netherlands Air Force and 179th Fighter Squadron from the Minnesota Air National Guard over the Netherlands, April 10, 2019.

The exercise included more than 50 aircraft from six different nations for the purpose of training joint and combined air operations in a broad spectrum of scenarios.

“Frisian Flag allows us to train alongside our European allies and fly with several types of fighter aircraft to ensure readiness for a variety of missions,” said Lt. Col. Paul Thornton, 179th Fighter Squadron commander and mission commander for the Air National Guard.

“This allows us to practice and be exposed to multi-nation air-to-air, surface-to-air threat scenarios as we would in a wartime scenario; vital training that isn’t easily accessible back home.”

The exercise gives Bloody Hundredth aircrew the opportunity to work with Air National Guard and allied forces aircraft.

“It’s always good to see how different countries train and operate,” Staff Sgt. Ryan Kemp, 351st Air Refueling Squadron boom operator. “It’s a big confidence builder with all the countries working together when we know we can rely on each other, and this just reinforces that.”

Participating in exercises like Frisian Flag helps continue the Bloody Hundredth’s mission as a ready force and strategic forward base, projecting airpower through unrivaled air refueling across Europe and Africa.
