Rumpel Fitness Center will soon be available to use 24/7, allowing Fort McCoy to increase its ability to meet the training needs of its customers.

“This 24/7 fitness initiative is going to allow us to increase the accessibility of our most utilized facility here at Fort McCoy,” said Patric McGuane, director of the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (DFMWR). “Rumpel Fitness Center averages more than 100,000 visitors per year, and we have consistently struggled to meet the demands of those users.”

Soldiers and civilians have frequently asked for a 24-hour fitness center in order to meet their physical training requirements, McGuane said. DFMWR worked with the Directorate of Emergency Services to find a solution that was both safe and affordable.

“By partnering with our Department of Emergency Services, we have mitigated the inherent risks of the unmanned opening an FMWR facility through the use of a CAC-enabled access system,” said Jeff Utesch, recreation specialist with DFMWR. “The pool will be closed to ensure patron safety, but the cardio equipment, the gym floor, and all resistance training will be accessible and monitored by cameras to ensure the safety of our users.”

Interested Soldiers and civilians must register their common access cards (CAC); sign a memorandum of agreement and liability waiver; and get an orientation about emergency procedures, phone usage, and the automated external defibrillator.

Patrons will be required to swipe their CACs for entry and be logged into a database. Surveillance cameras will be in use. Patrons are encouraged to exercise with a partner to minimize risks.

Violations of the rules will result in the loss of privileges and possibly referral to leadership. Areas that are not available to use during unmanned hours will be locked.

“With the ever-expanding and diverse missions of Fort McCoy, these expanded hours of operation are a step in the right direction toward meeting the fitness needs of our Soldiers and civilians,” McGuane said.

Installation of the 24/7 access system is scheduled for mid- to late April.
