HALIFAX, Nova Scotia -- The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Jason Dunham (DDG 109) arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia, for a scheduled port visit, April 7.

This visit reasserts cooperative ties between the United States and Canada, and precedes the start of the exercise Frontier Sentinel 19. This exercise helps to establish conditions for security and stability in the region as the two NATO allies work closely to defend North America from rapidly evolving threats.

Dunham’s crew of approximately 300 Sailors will be participating alongside Royal Canadian Navy forces, as well U.S. Coast Guard members in an exercise emphasizing anti-submarine warfare tactics.
“Our crew is excited to be returning to Halifax,” said Cmdr. Morgan Roberts, commanding officer of the Jason Dunham. “We were last here in 2017, and we are honored to be here working with our Canadian allies in efforts to preserve maritime security in the region.”

While in port, Jason Dunham Sailors will have the opportunity to experience the local culture in Halifax. Halifax, an Atlantic Ocean port on the eastern seaboard of Canada, is the provincial capital of Nova Scotia. The city is a major business hub that is known for its maritime history and is one of the oldest seaports in the region.

The ship, commissioned in 2010 and homeported in Norfolk, Virginia, is named in honor of Cpl. Jason Dunham, a 22-year-old Marine, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism during combat operations in Karabilah, Iraq, on April 14, 2004.
