U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District’s technical team completed a damage assessment of the Fair Haven east and west piers last Thursday that will inform the design for temporary actions to prevent further damages.

Working with the U.S. Coast Guard the technical team was able to view the Fair Haven piers from land and water to identify areas that would need to be secured to prevent further damages, and for public safety.

The team found that no bolt failures have occurred outside of the already degraded areas on the west pier, while a review of the east pier revealed no obvious structural damage. Based on the initial assessment, design work is being conducted to develop temporary repair options to be implemented this fall.

The temporary measures will minimize additional sheet pile damage along the affected reach, but will not repair the areas to their original state. Additional federal funding would be needed for a permanent repair to the damaged area.

The Corps of Engineers, working closely with the village, has installed a temporary barrier to prevent access to the west pier in the interest of public safety. Until the pier is fully repaired, it is recommend that the public stay away from the damaged sections of the pier.

We will continue to communicate the status of the project, to include information regarding funding, as soon as additional information is received.
