PACIFIC OCEAN – Sailors aboard Navy’s newest guided-missile destroyer, USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) passed another milestone: celebrating the 126th birthday of the chief petty officer while at sea, April 1.

The organizer of the day’s celebration, Chief Quarter Master Angel Jimenez, from Marathon, Fla., was inspired by the legacy of the ship’s namesake, Adm. Elmo Zumwalt Jr., when it came to planning the celebration.

The events of the day included a special dinner served to the crew by Zumwalt’s Chiefs Mess.

“Admiral Zumwalt was always giving back, he was always taking care of his men,” said Jimenez. “We wanted the crew to see that we were giving back, we’re showing our appreciation.”

The crew also gathered together in the hangar bay for a few words from the commanding officer and the command master chief on the importance of chiefs in the Navy.

“As a division officer, I learned to ask the chief, and in more senior positions, the question changes a little bit to ‘What does Chief think?’ but the main thrust is there: that the chief petty officer holds a special role in the life of a Sailor, both juniors and seniors alike,” said Capt. Andrew Carlson, Zumwalt’s commanding officer.

Zumwalt Command Master Chief CMDCM Roberto Venegas spoke about the chief as a figure of reliability in the Navy because of their years of experience, before leading the gathered chiefs in singing “Anchors Aweigh.”

“If you know the Navy, the Navy gets a lot of things right and the things that they don’t get right, they tend to get rid of, so with a 126 years of service we have proven that we do things right and we are here to stay for a very long time” said Venegas. “Happy birthday Chiefs, because you’ve earned it! You’ve earned the 126 years of being a part of this Navy."

The rank of Chief Petty Officer was established on April 1, 1893, and was the highest enlisted rank in the Navy until 1958.

Zumwalt is under operational command of U.S. 3rd Fleet. Third Fleet leads naval forces in the Pacific and provides the realistic, relevant training necessary for an effective global Navy. Third Fleet coordinates with U.S. 7th Fleet to plan and execute missions based on their complementary strengths to promote ongoing peace, security, and stability throughout the entire Pacific theater of operations.
