OXFORD, Ohio – Rear Adm. Mike Bernacchi, commander, Naval Service Training Command (NSTC) visited the Miami University Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC), April 2.
While there, Bernacchi met with Miami University’s President Gregory Crawford, had lunch with the unit’s professional staff, toured NROTC unit spaces, talked with first class midshipmen, and spoke at the company’s leadership lab period.
NROTC units report to NSTC and command visits are an opportunity for professional development for the midshipmen. It also provides an opportunity for the midshipmen to interact with a flag officer as well ask questions about the Navy. The visits also give the NSTC commander a chance to hear about any concerns or suggestions from the midshipmen and unit staff members.
“The NROTC professional staff and midshipmen at Miami University were honored to host Rear Adm. Bernacchi and his team for the day,” said Capt. Todd Bahlau, the unit’s commanding officer.
“We were able to showcase our outstanding and top achieving midshipmen along with the phenomenal support we receive from our university leadership. But, most importantly, this visit provided an opportunity for our midshipmen to engage with a flag officer to learn more about the leadership qualities necessary to succeed as future junior officers and to gain insight into upcoming new training opportunities,” he said.
Bernacchi spoke with the midshipmen about leadership, changes to the NROTC program to improve training, and the need for warfighters ready to lead the Navy and Marine Corps into the future.
Bernacchi also spoke about the New Student Indoctrination and Sea Trials cruises being implemented this summer. Bernacchi discussed the reasoning behind starting these training programs and answered questions from midshipmen.
Midshipman 1st Class Paul Kenney, the unit’s commanding officer said the admiral’s visit to Miami University was extremely beneficial for the entire company.
“His insight on how NROTC programs are evolving to meet modern training demands left midshipmen confident that NROTC will continue to commission high quality officers across the country. Rear Adm. Bernacchi clearly understands the challenges that Navy and Marine Corps junior officers face upon entering the fleet and is working with his team to best tailor training to meet those challenges head on. I look forward to seeing the caliber of officer produced by NROTC raised to an entirely new standard as a result,” Kenney said.
The NROTC program is overseen by Bernacchi and his NSTC staff at Naval Station Great Lakes, Illinois and Naval Air Station Pensacola, Fla. NROTC was established to develop midshipmen mentally, morally and physically and to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, loyalty and core values in order to commission college graduates as Navy and Marine Corps officers who possess a basic professional background, are motivated toward careers in uniformed services and have a potential for future development in mind and character so as to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship and government.
NSTC oversees 98 percent of initial officer and enlisted accessions training for the Navy, as well as the Navy's Citizenship Development program. NSTC also includes Recruit Training Command (RTC), the Navy's only boot camp also at Naval Station Great Lakes, the Navy ROTC program at more than 160 colleges and universities, Officer Training Command (OTC) on Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island, and the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) and Navy National Defense Cadet Corps (NDCC) citizenship development programs at more than 600 high schools worldwide.
