SAN DIEGO (NNS) – Coastal Riverine Force (CRF) chief petty officers (CPO) assigned to Coastal Riverine Group (CRG) 1, came together for a night of camaraderie to commemorate the 126th CPO Birthday with 11th Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) Joe Campa Jr. serving as the guest speaker during a dining in March 30 in San Diego.

The rank of chief petty officer was established on April 1, 1893 and has been in naval tradition for 126 years via Navy General Order 409 of Feb. 25, 1893. The rank was created to distinguish senior enlisted personnel based on their experience and ability to apply leadership and knowledge in providing guidance for junior personnel.

“It is great to be here participating in the time-honored tradition of a dining in,” said Campa. “I say that because I have always believed that the preservation of our customs and traditions is one of a chief petty officer’s most important responsibilities.”

“Our CPO Birthday has always been a time to reflect on the chiefs that have come before us and who have made the Mess what it is today,” said Campa. “Tonight, we pay tribute to those chiefs who lived up to the full measure of what those anchors represent. Now, I don’t think there are words that can adequately describe what I mean by this but you know when you meet a chief that has it...you can see it in their walk, in the way they carry themselves and in the way the tone of a space changes when they enter a room. You know what I am talking about, the legendary mystique of a chief petty officer.”

“Dining in goes back to the Viking Age where they would gather in the great hall and recount their great conquests and battles” said Senior Chief Master-at-Arms Andres Mejia, president of the CRG 1 CPO Mess. “My hopes are that we all remember those who have gone before us, of which the credit was automatically bestowed upon us, due to their courageous acts of heroism, humility and service, and of course, to partake in some time-honored traditions with some of the best warriors our nation has in its ranks.”

“We celebrate our 126th CPO Birthday through this time-honored tradition that promotes pride of service, raises morale and strengthens camaraderie within the Mess,” said Command Master Chief (CMDCM) Nicki Rios, CMDCM of Coastal Riverine Group (CRG) 1.

“More is expected of us, more is demanded of us, it is in the Creed,” said Rios. “To be a Navy chief today means to be the humble servant, technical expert, leader, counselor and coach. We are charged to invest in the development of our Sailors, influencing operational and war fighter competence as we carry out our mission for the Navy. Our action is reflective of our Navy core values and our identity is comprised of our core attributes.”

Rios addressed the crowd with final remarks saying, “We are the backbone of the Navy and I am extremely proud of the commitment demonstrated by my brothers and sisters as we continue in the pursuit of victory.”

CRF operates in harbors, rivers, bays, across the littorals and ashore. The primary mission of CRF is to conduct maritime security operations across all phases of military operations by defending high value assets, critical maritime infrastructure, ports and harbors both inland and on coastal waterways against enemies and when commanded conduct offensive combat operations.

CRG provides a core capability to defend designated high value assets throughout the green and blue-water environment and providing deployable forces worldwide in an integrated, joint and combined theater of operations.
