    16th Sustainment Brigade

BAUMHOLDER, Germany – Soldiers of the Knights’ Brigade traveled from across the garrison footprint to compete in the brigade’s Best Warrior Competition in Baumholder, Germany.
Eleven Knights’ ranging from junior enlisted to junior officer competed for the title of Brigade Best Warrior during the three day competition from March 25 to 27. The Soldiers’ skills were tested in a variety of events.
“We’ve done the PT test, M4 qualification, and M4 and M9 and stress shoots,” said Private 1st Class Shannel Chong, petroleum supply specialist of 493rd Petroleum Support Company, 18th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion. “My favorite events were the [Situational Training Exercise] lanes and land navigation.”
Chong was one of three junior enlisted Soldiers competing for the title of Best Warrior. The competition challenged her in new ways and she was able to learn from the experience.
“The hardest for me was the range day,” Chong said. “That was my first time shooting an M9, but I was able to learn a lot as I went on so I feel more comfortable with those weapons now.”
Sgt. 1st Class Ronny Myazoe, Operations NCO for the Knights’ Brigade, worked as the overall action officer, coordinating and planning the entire competition. He said the events the competitors participated in were specifically chosen to test their knowledge, skills, and abilities by conquering urban warfare simulations, demonstrating critical thinking, and conducting battle drills relevant to modern warfighting.
“The goal is to better themselves in today’s operating environment and move on to the next level of competition,” Myazoe said. “It will help the Knight Soldiers test their skills, endurance, fortitude, and resourcefulness as well as intellectual problem solving capabilities.”
Chong took first place for the junior enlisted Soldiers and won the opportunity to represent the brigade in the U.S. Army Europe Best Warrior Competition in Grafenwohr, Germany May 5 to 10.
“It’s very humbling to realize that I’ve made it to this level and am able to continue learning and growing with this experience,” she said. “It’d be an amazing honor to represent the brigade and 21st Theater Sustainment Command at this competition.”
