FORT BENNING, Ga. – George W. Steuber, the deputy garrison commander of U.S. Army Garrison Fort Benning, celebrated his retirement after 53 years of service to the nation during a ceremony at the Maneuver Center of Excellence headquarters March 29 here. Steuber enlisted in the Army shortly after his 17th birthday, beginning as a private in basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and leaving active duty as a colonel directing the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command’s International Armies Program Directorate at Fort Monroe, Virginia. His time in uniform included 39 months in Vietnam. As a civilian, he was a military adviser to the Czech Republic’s Training and Doctrine Command and a senior military analyst in Joint Forces Command J-9. He served as a deputy garrison commander at Fort Rucker, Alabama, from 2005 to 2009 before coming to Fort Benning. As deputy garrison commander at Fort Benning, he helped develop the strategic action plan in accordance with the MCoE priorities, saw the garrison through budgetary uncertainties and sequestration initiatives, initiated the Installation of the Future program, and bolstered the installation’s cultural resource management program.
